Hypnosis

The art and science of communicating with your deeper brain…

Hypnosis for Christians?

  • The Problem.

Many Christians are understandably concerned about the idea of hypnosis. Doesn’t hypnosis fundamentally require giving oneself over to another’s control? And aren’t we supposed to guard our hearts and our minds, choosing what we place our attention on and how we spend our time? Yes, absolutely. And, in fact, hypnosis is a great way to do just that. Because, hypnotherapy is definitely not about giving oneself over to the control of another. And neither is it about emptying oneself or becoming a “blank slate”.

  • A Possibility.

Human beings are designed to be whole and integrated; brain, body and spirit, working together for growth and change. If we stay only in the cognitive realm, we will stay truly stuck. The reality is that the way we were created to change requires the cooperation of our deep midbrain. If our midbrain believes we are not safe to change, we will not. And so we have to learn how to talk to this deeper part of our brain. The midbrain learns, not through logic but through images, metaphor, stories, and the senses. The midbrain learns much like a small child might learn, simply and in felt experiences.

  • A New Perspective.

Hypnosis, most simply understood, is about focused and absorbed attention. Attention absorbed in such a way that we experience a story rather than just hearing about it. In order for real change to take place, it is vital to capture a person’s imagination in the same way that good preachers do as they help us to imagine what we read about in the bible.

By now, you may be thinking that this doesn’t sound like hypnosis at all. And that’s because Therapeutic Hypnosis is not what most people think of as hypnosis. What most people think of, is at best, on par with a good magic show. It is a sleight of hand that makes an observer think that something is happening that is not, in fact, happening. Therapeutic hypnosis, however, is quite the opposite. It is used to reinforce the beliefs and desires that people truly have and shift the ones that have been getting in the way of a person’s agency and choice. It calms the micromanaging voice of the neocortical part of the brain so that the deeper, experientially focused part of the brain can have a say.

Hypnosis can help with …

  • Trauma (spiritual, medical, relational, sports related, workplace,…)

  • Anxious feelings and thoughts

  • Burnout & Compassion Fatigue

  • Creativity blocks

  • Patterns of people pleasing

  • Relational issues

Basically, if you are feeling stuck, Hypnosis may be able to help. If you’re uncertain and would like to talk about it, I’d be happy to do so.

Hypnosis can help you get unstuck!

  • Often in response to traumatic experiences, the human brain adopts habitual ways of managing deep and sometimes unbearable pain. When unhealthy, these patterned ways of responding, can continue to have negative effects on our health and relationships long after the trauma has passed. Because of the way habits are formed in the brain, they are typically resistant to even our best intentions and efforts for change.

Hypnotherapy is one gentle and effective way to access the deeper places in the brain where destructive habits are stored, allowing us to update old memories and allow for the formation of new and healthier habits that better fit your life today.

  • Hypnotherapy is not like stage hypnosis. You will not “magically” develop the ability to speak Russian. You will not unwittingly share a deep dark secret that you didn't want anyone else to know. You will not find yourself hopping around like a rabbit or braying like a donkey, unless of course, you want to...

  • Hypnotherapy feels like "Focused Daydreaming". You are fully awake and in control of your experience, free to accept or reject anything you hear. We will together craft the suggestions and meaning that you want me to focus on and I will show you how to slow your brain wave pattern to the ideal state of receptivity for incorporating new learning and generating creative new connections. This alpha/theta brain wave pattern is similar to how a person might feel when having a peaceful daydream or light nap. Sometimes, it’s not even within a formal hypnosis session; it’s just a conversational moment that helps you to pay attention more deeply to an experience in a way that makes it feel more real to your nervous system.

It feels like what artists describe as “flow”, when they get lost in the moment of creating and lose track of time. Or, becoming absorbed in a wonderful book or movie. And, when the story ends, you look around to reorient yourself to your present moment and things feel different and somehow more hopeful.

  • Trauma Informed Hypnosis can be immensely helpful when you are feeling stuck. Sometimes, if despite your best efforts, you continue to struggle with move forward in a particular way, it’s because your deeper brain is stuck in a sympathetic alert mode, staying on guard for anything it perceives as a threat. And, the human brain typically perceives anything new as a threat (which can make change a lot harder). Hypnosis can calm your mind and create a state in which your brain can learn a new and more helpful way forward.

“Sermons aren’t just to make truth clear to the mind-but to make it real to the heart. Change happens by feeding the imagination new beauties.”

—Tim Keller (former pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian in NYC)

Why I love Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is truly one of my favorite ways to help clients! It engages a person’s imagination and is one of the easiest ways to create a new experience for the emotional brain. Because the emotional brain learns best from story, imagery, metaphor, music, color (sensory experiences), hypnotherapy often creates an atmosphere of play and exploration, reconnecting us with our childlike selves. It is fun and also restful as we can learn to trust the God who made us, instead of depending so much on our own understanding.

What you’ll gain

Hypnotherapy can help you to:

  • Release old stories that are stuck in your nervous system and showing up as anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, people pleasing, burnout, and many more.

  • Practice self compassion

  • Remember and reconnect with your sense of play and childlike wonder.

  • Access your deeper brain and shift the sticking point so you can find your footing again.

  • Ignite creativity and confidence.

  • Integrate Scripture naturally into your healing process, in a truly experiential way.

  • Feel lighter, freer, and more connected within yourself, in your relationship with God, and with other people.
